Bamboo Raft on Hawaii Mountain Road Cut

by Lola Novak

A heavy raft of lashed bamboo logs rests on the gravel shoulder of a narrow road cut high in the Hawaiian mountains. Late morning sun pierces through thin monsoon fog, casting soft shadows across the wet, gray stone walls of the embankment. The river below reflects the sky in a mirrored surface that doubles the silhouette of the logs. One trekking pole leans against the rough guardrail flare in the foreground, its rubber tip pressing into damp earth. Rust stains streak the metal railing, against the pale green of nearby ferns. The logs show fresh cuts and natural bark textures, bound with weathered rope. A pocketknife lies open on the gravel near the raft's edge, its blade catching a glint of light. The raw weight of the timber against the fragile, wet air of the high pass.
