Bamboo Raft Drifting in Jakarta River Fog
by Taylor Todd
Dense fog rests on the dark surface of a river near Jakarta, softening the edges of a long raft constructed from thick, cylindrical bamboo logs. The logs, bound tightly with natural fibers, float in deep shadow, their rough, fibrous textures barely visible until a sharp rim of cool light traces their upper curves against the gloom. City lights begin to glow in the distant background, casting faint orange reflections that shimmer on the water's surface. The bamboo poles stretch across the frame, creating a strong diagonal line that leads toward the hazy shoreline. A small, weathered wooden paddle rests against the side of the nearest log, its surface worn smooth by constant use. The stillness of the water mirrors the solemnity of the heavy timber floating in the predawn mist.
