Artisan Workbench in Florence
by Ernest Price
Golden hour light slants through the narrow archway of a Via dei Calzaiuoli workshop, illuminating a chaotic workbench where a brass drawer knob sits beside a pair of steel calipers and a single pottery shard. Outside, the warm late afternoon sun bathes the terracotta rooftops in amber, while a cluster of pigeons takes flight from a nearby cornice, their wings catching the backlight. A braided rug fiber, frayed and dusty, drapes over the edge of a wooden stool, its texture highlighted by the directional glow. In the background, string lights are just beginning to twinkle against the deepening blue of the twilight sky, against the rough, stained plaster walls that have absorbed centuries of Florentine dust and commerce.
