Aqueduct Arches Over Ocher Fields in Rain in along a levee path above floodwater in Bywater, New Orleans

Aqueduct Arches Over Ocher Fields in Rain

by Elena Golden

Steady rain falls across a concrete aqueduct line marching over ocher farmland in Bywater. From a low angle near the ground, massive gray arches rise above floodwater along a muddy levee path. Honeyed evening light falls through the downpour, painting the wet stone surfaces in warm orange tones. The low-angle sun casts long shadows beneath the curves, highlighting the rough texture of the concrete against the smooth water. Small puddles collect at the base of the pillars, reflecting the sky. A droplet rests on the rough edge of the nearest arch, marking the boundary between the gray structure and the dark channel below.
