Dawn Light in Quetzaltenango Cathedral Ambulatory

by Felicia Sweet

Cool blue morning light streams through high stained glass windows, illuminating dust particles suspended in the air above the stone floor of a cathedral ambulatory. The curved walkway wraps around the foot of a heavy stone altar, leading toward three radiating chapels. Each chapel houses a glass reliquary containing a relic, catching the faint pre-sunrise glow. The stone walls show weathered textures, while the floor reflects the pale, gray-blue illumination. A vertical line of light falls across the edge of the altar, highlighting the rough chisel marks in the masonry. The air remains still, allowing the dust motes to drift slowly within the shafts of illumination.
