Cooling Evening in Muscat

The heat of a Muscat summer evening lingers in the air, visible as a faint shimmer over the pink coral-stone facade of a traditional house. In the shaded recess of a doorway, a small plastic table fan oscillates slowly, its white grille catching the last orange light of the sunset. Beside it, a tall glass of ice water sweats profusely, condensation dripping onto a woven palm-frond mat that covers the concrete floor. A cluster of rough-skinned dates sits in a shallow bowl, their skins beaded with moisture from the cold drink nearby.
