Adjusting Hem in Taipei

by Gerald Rose

Winter noon light floods a narrow alley in Dadaocheng, illuminating a row of weathered shop fronts where a tailor’s display spills onto the wet pavement. Cracked painted stucco frames a window revealing a cluttered workbench, but the true focus is a local interaction: an elderly woman in a bright yellow raincoat adjusts a hem while a younger apprentice holds a pair of heavy-duty sewing scissors, their blades catching the diffuse light. Beside them, a stack of colorful spice tins from a neighboring grocer adds a splash of saturated red and orange against the gray concrete, while a simple ceramic carafe sits on a low stool, steam faintly visible in the crisp air.
