Adjusting Hem in Hoi An

Under the deepening indigo of Hoi An’s blue hour, a narrow alleyway is illuminated by the warm, amber spill from an open tailor’s shop. A young woman in a simple white ao dai stands on a low wooden step stool, adjusting a hem on a customer, her focus intense. On the cluttered workbench beside her, a pair of heavy tailor shears rests near a spool box, while a porcelain jar and a string of pearl necklaces catch the light from a nearby lantern. The shop’s wooden shutters and the wet, reflective pavement of the street, where the distant glow of paper lanterns hints at the Thu Bon River beyond.
