Mason's Workbench in Tainan
by Sara McCall
Under the flat, diffuse glare of a winter noon sky, a narrow alleyway in Tainan’s old district pulses with quiet industry. A mason’s workbench, scarred by decades of chisel marks, is cluttered with the tools of restoration: a faded leather tool apron hangs from a rusted nail, its pockets bulging with trowels and brushes, while a single heirloom key rests atop a stack of yellowed architectural blueprints. Nearby, a miniature American Shepherd sits patiently beside a customer examining a repaired clay tile, its fur catching the weak sunlight. Weathered red brick walls and a hanging hand broom, capturing a moment of skilled labor where history is actively maintained against the cold, bright day.
