Cobbler at Late Afternoon Light
by Douglas Ware
Golden late afternoon light spills across a narrow alley in Taipei, illuminating a street-side repair stall where a cobbler sits on a low metal work stool, his hands busy with a leather strap. Behind him, a row of colorful plastic aprons hangs from a rusted rack, their bright yellows and blues against the damp, stained concrete wall. A folding fan rests open on a nearby crate, catching the breeze from the street, while a pair of heavy rubber raincoats, usually hidden, drape over a hook, hinting at the sudden summer storms. The vertical lines of utility poles and the horizontal stretch of power cables, creating a layered composition of daily life and urban infrastructure.
