Abandoned Rust Furnace Altar Dessie Evening
by Anne Costa
Warm candlelight flickers across the corroded steel ribs of a massive blast furnace, transforming its industrial decay into the vaulted nave of a secular cathedral. The setting rests at the foot of a rough-hewn stone altar in an indoor space within Dessie, where the dry season air leaves surfaces clean and free of dust. Narrow beams of orange light cut through the dimness, highlighting the flaking red-orange texture of rust against the dark grey metal. Several thin candles stand on the altar, casting long, trembling shadows that stretch across the smooth concrete floor. The wide panoramic view shows the sheer scale of the rusted structure towering above the small, solitary religious markers, creating a stark contrast between heavy industry and quiet reverence. at the edge is the sharp, jagged edge of a rusted beam catching the light against the dark background.
