Zodiacal Light Cone Above Jeddah Observatory
by Carly Hurst
A pale, triangular glow rises sharply from the western horizon, its edges diffusing into the bright blue sky above a remote field station in Jeddah. The structure sits on flat, arid ground scattered with light-colored stones and sparse, dry scrub typical of the cool season. Heat haze shimmers visibly above the dark gray concrete surfaces of the observatory dome and adjacent laboratory buildings, distorting the air just inches above the floor. Crisp, clean light illuminates the metallic vents and white-painted walls, casting short, hard shadows that define the geometric precision of the architecture. The celestial cone maintains a steady, analytical presence against the hazy backdrop, its soft luminosity against the sharp lines of the equipment. A thin shadow from a ventilation pipe stretches across the white door frame, at the base of the scene in physical reality.
