Woven Palm Fans Vendor at BGC Manila Market
by Ann Martinez
Bright noon light flattens the shadows across a narrow flea market lane in BGC, Manila. A vendor stands behind a low stall, surrounded by stacks of hand-woven palm fans in shades of dried straw and deep green. The fans fan out in overlapping arcs, their rough textures catching the harsh overhead glare. Spice dust hangs visibly in the air, settling on the vendor's weathered skin and the wooden slats of the display. Foreground foliage blurs into soft green bokeh, framing the bustling activity behind. Crowds move in the background, their forms indistinct but their presence felt through the density of bodies. The heat seems to ripple off the tarps overhead, distorting the light slightly. One shadow stretches beneath the stall, sharp and dark against the pale concrete floor.
