Vendor Stacks Tin Lanterns at Marrakech Noon

by Micheal Wyatt

Flat noon light strikes a cluster of stacked tin lanterns at a market stall in Marrakech. The vendor, wearing a long indigo djellaba, arranges cylindrical metal objects with practiced hands. Spice dust coats the wooden planks and settles on the silver rims of the lanterns. Above, rough burlap tarps hang low, filtering the harsh sun. Behind the primary stack, rows of woven baskets and ceramic jars recede into the crowded depth of the booth. Heat shimmer rises visibly from the dusty floor under the tarps. One brass handle on the nearest lantern catches a sharp glint of reflected sunlight.
