Browsing Shoppers at Flower Auction Bench
by Mei Hicks
Bright midmorning light fills the narrow aisle of a flower auction bench in Managua, filtering through a soft overcast sky to create even, diffused illumination. Shoppers in cool season clothing crowd the space, their hands reaching toward stacks of fresh blooms arranged on wooden tables. The foreground features a blurred cluster of green leaves, framing the busy activity behind it. Colors range from deep reds and vibrant yellows of the flowers to the muted grays of the concrete floor. Wooden crates and metal racks line the path, holding rows of cut stems ready for sale. A woman in a denim jacket leans forward to inspect a bundle of white lilies, her face partially obscured by a hanging garland of jasmine. The scene ends with a close-up of a plastic price tag clipped to a wire rack, its numbers slightly smudged by handling.
