Arranging Ceramics in Merida

by Everett Callahan

Under the harsh, flat noon light of Merida’s Plaza Grande, a street vendor manages a makeshift stall shaded by a fraying blue awning. A white plastic table fan spins lazily, blowing dust across a spread of hand-painted ceramic plates featuring intricate blue floral patterns, resting near a woven cushion cover used as a seat. Behind the counter, a potted hibiscus plant thrives in the heat, its green leaves against the bright white stucco of the colonial arcade arching overhead. Pedestrians in light cotton shirts hurry past the shadowed colonnade, their legs blurred by motion, while the vendor wipes sweat from his brow, entirely focused on arranging the colorful ceramics for the few tourists lingering in the shade.
