Palm Weaving in Ermita Evening Light
by Lee Berry
Honeyed evening light falls through the open workshop in Ermita, Manila, illuminating floating dust motes that drift in thick shafts above the workbench. A basket maker sits beneath the shade of a large palm tree, their hands moving with rhythmic precision as they interlace stiff, green fronds into a tight weave. Warm candlelight glows from nearby lanterns, casting a soft amber hue on the textured fibers and the maker's focused expression. The wooden floorboards run diagonally, creating leading lines that guide the view toward the intricate pattern forming in the basket. Green palm leaves contrast against the warm, dim interior, while the cool season air is suggested by the maker's light cotton shirt. at the edge is the sharp, dark shadow of a palm frond tip resting against the curved rim of the unfinished basket.
