Workbench in Auckland at Midday Light
by Oscar Mejia
Under a flat overcast sky, a weathered wooden workbench in a Parnell workshop holds a scattered array of tools and ingredients. A cast iron skillet sits beside an open biscuit tin, its interior lined with grease-stained paper and a few remaining shortbread cookies. Fern fronds from a nearby pot drape over the edge, casting soft, diffuse shadows across the surface. Flour dust settles on the dark stone countertop, mixing with wood shavings and a stray needle from a case left open. A thermos stands upright, condensation beading on its side, while garlic bulbs rest near a half-finished jigsaw puzzle. A quiet moment of pause, where cooking and crafting intersect in a lived-in space.
