Workbench after dark in Auckland
Under the amber wash of sodium streetlamps, a weathered workbench sits in the open doorway of a Ponsonby joinery shop, cluttered with the tools of a late shift. A pair of leather work gloves rests near a half-empty mug of tea, their fingers curled as if just set down by a tired carpenter who stepped out for a smoke. The rough grain of the pine table contrasts with the smooth, reflective surface of a discarded terracotta bowl, catching the neon spill from a nearby pharmacy sign. A faint wisp of steam rises from the mug, twisting into the cool night air before vanishing into the shadows of the alleyway.
