Woman Grinding Spices at Dawn Near Mixco
Deep shadow swallows the lower half of a stone mortar while a thin rim of pale dawn light traces the curve of its rim and the woman's profile. She sits low to the ground, her hands pressing a wooden pestle into a mound of dried chilies and seeds. The stone surface is worn smooth by decades of use, showing dark stains from previous batches. Above her, heavy monsoon clouds gather in layers of charcoal and slate, breaking only where the first light pierces through to illuminate falling dust motes. Her clothing is simple and practical, stained with the earth tones of the surrounding soil. one drop of moisture rests on the edge of the pestle, catching the weak morning glow. The texture of the stone contrasts with the rough weave of her skirt against the damp air.
