Mist rests on the cobblestone slope of Barrio de la Cruz, softening the vibrant lime-green stucco of a colonial house where a wrought-iron gate stands slightly ajar. Inside the courtyard, a weathered wooden table holds a cluster of hand-painted barro negro ceramics, their matte black surfaces absorbing the diffuse dawn light rather than reflecting it. A woman in a bright huipil sorts through a woven palm basket filled with fresh corn tortillas, her movements blurred by the low shutter speed required for the dim light.
