Grinding Corn in Oaxaca

Warm late afternoon light spills across a busy Oaxacan kitchen counter where a local woman in a floral huipil grinds corn in a stone molcajete. Beside the heavy volcanic rock, a stack of white ceramic mugs sits near a worn baking sheet, hinting at upcoming tamales. The air is thick with steam rising from a pot, while a bottle of mezcal rests in the shadowed corner. A wooden chair with a faded cushion is pulled close, its legs catching the low sun. In the background, a boot scraper stands by the door, at the base of the domestic scene in the rugged texture of the city's earth-toned walls and dusty floor tiles.
