Crushing Spices in Marrakech

by Krystal Huerta

The damp cobblestones of the Medina reflect the amber glow of streetlamps as dusk settles into the heavy, wet air. A lone worker in a waxed canvas jacket stands beneath the overhang of a spice merchant’s stall, using a worn wooden mortar and pestle to crush dried chilies, the rhythmic motion sending fine red dust into the mist. Beside him, a cardboard crate holds stacked clay tagines, their terracotta surfaces slick with rain. In the blurred background, the indistinct shapes of pedestrians pass under umbrellas, their silhouettes softened by the downpour.
