Winter Roof Crew Rolling Membrane at Sunrise

by Cecilia Craft

Thick ground fog pools in the depressions of a muddy construction access road near Skolavordustigur, where the first rays of sunrise cut through the gray morning. Four workers in heavy winter gear roll a wide sheet of black roofing membrane across a flat concrete parapet. The membrane unrolls smoothly, its matte surface against the wet, churned earth below. Their breath is invisible in the cold air as they move with coordinated urgency. Snow dusts the distant hills, marking the dead of winter. The low sun casts long, sharp shadows that stretch across the slick pavement, highlighting the texture of the mud and the tension in the unrolling material. A stray piece of orange safety tape flutters near the edge of the frame.
