Windsurfer Launches Chop Wave Noon Boston

by Georgia Stephens

Flat noon sunlight bleaches the water surface into a sheet of tropical brightness while a windsurfer leans back against a force-six wind. The board cuts upward off a choppy wave crest, spraying fine white droplets that hang suspended in the air. Green grass and dry summer dust rise in a low haze from the near shore, kicking up where the athlete's stance shifts. The sail catches the light, its fabric taut and geometric against the open fields of South End. From the low ground, the horizon line tilts sharply, showing the angle of the launch. A wet trail of foam marks the exact point where the board left the water.
