Cool morning light spills across the Charles River Esplanade, illuminating a rowing shell being hauled onto the launch ramp by two athletes in dark wetsuits. The boat’s sleek fiberglass hull catches the dull gray sky, against the rough concrete of the dock. Nearby, a discarded wicker basket sits empty on the wet pavement, its shadow stretching long and distorted against the plastered wall of a nearby boathouse. A hand broom leans against a metal railing, bristles facing the damp air, while a single herb plant in a cracked pot adds a touch of green to the industrial scene. The water ripples gently, reflecting the muted colors of the early dawn.
