Wildfire Lookout Portrait Near Bar Harbor
by Leslie Cox
Bright midday light strikes the weathered skin of a wildfire lookout, highlighting deep sunburn across the bridge of the nose and cheeks. The subject stands against a backdrop of pale, churning ocean spray that hangs suspended in the air like fine mist. Dark binoculars rest against the chest, their lenses reflecting the harsh white sky. Behind the figure, the rugged coastline of Bar Harbor fades into a soft blur of gray and blue, creating vast negative space that isolates the person. The turn of seasons is visible in the slight chill of the light and the muted tones of the distant trees. Fine droplets of salt water rest on the eyelashes and the rough fabric of a heavy wool coat. The eyes remain fixed forward, scanning the horizon with steady, unmoving intensity.
