Pedestrians in Halifax at Noon Light

by Jack Harding

A narrow cobblestone path in Halifax’s historic district is lined with red brick buildings featuring dark green wooden shutters and wrought iron lanterns. Snow piles along the curbs and dust the shoulders of passersby wearing heavy wool coats and knit hats. The sky is a flat, bright winter white, casting diffuse light over the scene. A few people huddle near a doorway with a striped awning, shaking off slush from their boots. Street signs in English and French mark the intersection, and a parked delivery van sits idle by the curb. The ground is wet and slushy, reflecting the gray light, while steam rises from a nearby vent, mixing with the cold air.
