Victorian Chimney Tower Over Grain Elevator
by Kelly Weeks
Cool evening light spills across the rusted brickwork of a towering Victorian chimney stack rising above a sprawling grain elevator complex near Culiacán. The structure stands stark against a clear autumn sky, its red masonry weathered by decades of industrial use. Warm sodium work lights glow from high windows, casting orange pools on the corrugated metal siding below. Dry golden leaves scatter across the concrete loading dock, against the heavy steel beams and riveted girders that support the massive silos. The mechanical severity of the architecture is evident in the sharp geometric lines and the sheer verticality of the smokestack, which dominates the panoramic view. Dust hangs suspended in the cooling daylight, settling on the rough textures of the aged brick and the smooth, painted steel of the conveyor hoppers.
