Vendor's Cart in Chicago

Under the flat, shadowless noon glare of a Chicago overcast, a street vendor’s cart sits anchored to the sidewalk by heavy iron wheels, the metal surfaces bleached to a dull silver. A stainless steel utensil crock overflows with wooden spoons and wire whisks, their chaotic arrangement against the rigid geometry of the adjacent brick building’s fire escape. The vendor’s hands, calloused and stained with tomato paste, rest momentarily on the cart’s edge, pausing between tasks. Behind the station, a row of faded paper lanterns hangs limp and unused, their red silk muted by the harsh daylight.
