Snow rests on the rusted iron railing of a Chicago brownstone stoop, where a discarded black rake head lies half-buried in the drift, its tines pointing upward like a skeletal fan. Behind the railing, a window reflects the flat white glare of a winter noon sky, while inside, a stack of yellow recipe cards is visible against the dark interior, blurred by the cold glass. A rolling cart with peeling paint sits idle on the sidewalk, its wheels caked with gray slush, next to a patchwork pillow that has been blown against the doorframe.
