Cool morning light spills across the faded ochre facade of a Roman apartment building, catching the wet sheen of a narrow street where a vendor’s cart sits idle before the rush. A metal ladder-back chair rests precariously on the sidewalk near the cart’s wooden crate, its slats worn smooth by years of use. Beside it, a plastic cooler jug filled with ice water reflects the pale blue sky, condensation beading on its surface. The vendor, a man in a faded blue apron, leans against the cart, adjusting a brass hinge on the lid of a stacked tiffin tin. Geraniums in chipped terracotta pots line the edge of a nearby balcony, their red blooms stark against the grey stone.
