Upward Rain Over Cookie Tin in on a workshop shelf in Zhengzhou

Upward Rain Over Cookie Tin

by Gary McCarthy

A vintage cookie tin rests on a painted utility cabinet, its labels catching soft tungsten light that cuts through predawn darkness. The cabinet surface shows deep shelf wear, with paint chipping to reveal raw wood beneath. Crisp silver streaks of rain fall upward from the tin, defying gravity in a deliberate, impossible arc against the warm interior shadows. The dry season air leaves the surfaces matte and dusty, while the upward motion of the water creates sharp, frozen reflections on the tin's curved edges. Chipped paint textures frame the silver trails as they climb toward the ceiling, their metallic sheen against the dull red and blue of the cabinet. One streak breaks against the tin's rim, glowing brighter than the surrounding lamplight.
