Copper Sunset Reflection Traffic Light North Loop in along a shuttered arcade in North Loop, Austin

Copper Sunset Reflection Traffic Light North Loop

by Danny Burnett

Rich amber sunset light spills across the wet asphalt of a North Loop street corner, illuminating a deep puddle where a traffic light reflects. The reflection shows a red signal glowing against a copper sky. Along the shuttered arcade, dark metal grates sit closed. Above the pavement, heat shimmer distorts the air, creating a wavering veil. The puddle's surface holds an impossible sight: a corridor extends visibly farther than the building that contains it. This extra length stretches into the water, defying the physical limits of the street corner. The impossible hallway recedes into the reflection, ending in a vanishing point that does not exist in the real world. A sharp edge of the curb cuts the water's surface, separating the real street from the endless visual tunnel.
