Upside Down Djembe in Agra Jazz Club Rain
by Sara Bryant
Warm side light illuminates the carved wooden base of a djembe drum standing on a dark stage floor in an Agra jazz club. Predawn darkness fills the background, broken only by the soft glow of string lights. A light drizzle falls visibly through the air, catching the light in fine threads. The ceiling has transformed into a sheet of water, reflecting the entire scene upside down. The drum's reflection hangs inverted above, its carved details mirroring the real instrument with perfect symmetry against the dark, liquid ceiling. Droplets rest on the surface of this water ceiling, distorting the inverted image slightly at the edges. The wood grain of the drum base appears rough and tactile under the warm glow, against the smooth, fluid surface of the reflection above.
