Trench Shoring on Balearic Construction Deck in on an active construction deck in the Balearic Islands

Trench Shoring on Balearic Construction Deck

by Patricia Duncan

Pale limestone walls border an active construction deck where a deep utility trench cuts through the earth. Steel shoring beams painted a dull industrial red brace the trench sides against the dry soil. A fine layer of ground fog pools in the lowest corners of the excavation, resting on the damp clay beneath the metal plates. Bright midmorning light falls through the haze, illuminating dust hanging suspended above the trench floor. Workers in high-visibility vests move with disciplined coordination along the wooden planks laid across the opening. The metal surfaces gleam with a wet sheen from the recent rain, sitting beside the dry, cracked earth nearby. One shadow from a vertical support beam falls across the muddy trench floor.
