Rebar Splice Rack in Lecce Morning Light

by Douglas West

Hard morning light slices across a taped-off excavation edge in Lecce, catching the sharp angles of a rebar splice rack standing beside a concrete footing layout. Deep shadows swallow the lower footing trenches while a bright rim light defines the rusted steel bars against the pale, dusty air. Sawdust and concrete dust drift through the beam, settling on the damp, reddish-brown earth of the site. Converging lines of the excavation walls draw toward a vanishing point where the morning sun begins to illuminate the scattered construction debris. The rough texture of the wet ground contrasts with the smooth, painted yellow tape marking the safety boundary along the trench lip.
