Pigeons in Tokyo at Flat Noon Light

by Cheryl Higgins

A narrow alleyway in Shinjuku is lit by flat, shadowless noon light that flattens the depth between a weathered concrete retaining wall and a chain-link fence. A small cluster of gray pigeons gathers on the cracked asphalt, pecking at crumbs near a discarded plastic bottle. To the left, a faded red fire hose reel is mounted on the wall, its brass nozzle catching a dull, flat reflection. Above, tangled utility cables cut across the sky, casting no distinct shadows.
