Flat noon light washes over a narrow backstreet in Tokyo where a small convenience store spills its inventory onto the pavement. A stack of glossy, green cabbages sits precariously atop a cardboard box near the entrance, their waxy leaves reflecting the harsh, shadowless sky. Beside them, a metal rack holds bundles of cutlery wrapped in clear plastic, catching glints of light that compete with the produce. A Shiba Inu, wearing a red harness, pauses mid-step on the concrete, nose twitching toward the vegetables while its owner, partially visible in a faded apron, reaches for a receipt inside the dimly lit shop.
