Tongan Kava Ceremony in Querétaro Courtyard
by Misty Gill
Gray clouds press low over a stone courtyard where a traditional Tongan kava ceremony unfolds near the walls of a temple in Santiago de Querétaro. Participants sit on woven mats arranged in concentric circles, their hands moving rhythmically as they prepare the drink in a large wooden bowl. Diffused light reflects off a shallow pool of water bordering the space, casting soft, shimmering highlights on the wet stone and the polished surfaces of the wooden vessels. Early autumn air leaves the leaves of nearby trees slightly yellowed, while the heavy overcast sky eliminates harsh shadows. The composition layers depth with figures in the foreground, a central gathering area, and architectural arches receding into the background. A droplet of water rolls slowly down the curved rim of the wooden bowl, catching the pale morning light.
