Tomato Rows Under White Hoops in Sudan
by Ross Gray
Bright midmorning light floods a wide agricultural expanse in Sudan, illuminating fresh green tomato plants arranged in neat furrows. White plastic hoops arch overhead, forming a skeletal tunnel structure that stretches across the frame. Along the base of the rows, black irrigation tape lies flush against the dark, moisture-saturated soil, its surface shimmering with reflected light from standing water. The cool season air is suggested by the crisp, vibrant green of the foliage and the clear blue sky visible between the white arches. The ground appears soft and rich, holding the water in shallow pools that catch the sun. In the distance, the rows continue toward a hazy horizon line where the earth meets the sky. One droplet rests on the edge of a tomato leaf, reflecting the white curve of the hoop above it.
