Timber Facade Carved Ends Santa Cruz Canal in beside a canal-front facade in Santa Cruz de la Sierra

Timber Facade Carved Ends Santa Cruz Canal

by Christine Drake

Sunlight strikes the exposed timber frame of a house standing beside a canal in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Dark, carved beam ends protrude from the white plaster walls, their intricate geometric patterns softened by the sheen of a light drizzle. Water droplets rest on the rough wood grain, creating a high-contrast texture against the smooth, wet masonry. The sky above is a flat, pale gray, diffusing the midday light so that shadows remain soft beneath the overhangs. Along the canal edge, the stone pavement reflects the muted tones of the architecture, at the base of the structure in its humid, seasonal transition. One carved knot on the lower beam marks the end of the frame, resting just above the damp stone curb.
