Snow drifts across a high-altitude ranch corral where a flock of broiler chickens clusters near metal feed augers. The ground is a patchwork of white powder and dark, trodden earth, while clipped flock charts hang on the wooden fence posts, their paper edges stiff against the cold air. Low-hanging gray clouds press down on the horizon, diffusing the light into a flat, uniform glow that softens the harshness of the winter afternoon.
