Temizuya Basin in Rio Chapel Stained Glass Light

by George Hawkins

Morning light falls through thick incense haze, illuminating a traditional Japanese temizuya water basin placed inside a Rio de Janeiro chapel. Sunlight pierces the dust, casting geometric patterns of red, blue, and gold across the wet stone basin and the resting bamboo ladle. Condensation beads along the edge of a nearby window frame, glistening in the early glow. The glass pane presents a surreal impossibility: the reflection shows the interior of the same chapel rather than the outdoors, creating a loop of stone walls and stained arches that fold back upon themselves. Leading lines of the chapel floor draw toward the basin, where water droplets rest on the rim. One droplet hangs from the bamboo handle, catching the fractured light.
