First Light in Damanhur Chapel Stained Glass Haze

by Gavin Hammond

Early morning sun pierces the interior of a Damanhur chapel, cutting through a thick, yellowish incense haze that hangs suspended in the air. Dust motes float visibly within these bright, angled shafts of light, creating a tangible texture against the dark, quiet room. The light passes through stained glass panels, casting fragmented patches of deep amber, crimson, and teal onto the polished wooden floor and plain walls. A low-angle perspective emphasizes the height of the space, where the beams originate from high windows and stretch down toward the foreground. The stillness is absolute, with no movement except for the slow drift of particles illuminated by the monsoon-season glow. A sharp edge of red light rests on a smooth stone step at the bottom of the frame.
