Swordsmith Examining Blade Edge in Niamey
by Hailey Hale
Dense, grayish-white fog hangs low over the dusty courtyard of an old quarter in Niamey, softening the edges of weathered mud-brick walls. A swordsmith stands in open shade, his face marked by the afternoon sun filtering through a nearby canopy. His eyes, sharp and focused, lock onto the thin, gleaming edge of a long blade held at arm's length. The metal reflects a cool, pale light against his warm, textured skin. He wears a simple, faded indigo tunic that contrasts with the dusty earth tones of the surrounding architecture. Fine particles of dust float in the stagnant, humid air near his boots. The negative space around him emphasizes the stillness of his inspection against the quiet, rain-slicked street. One scratch on the steel catches the diffuse light, revealing the precision of the work.
