Man Sharpening Scythe in Southampton Market Lane
by Jane Potts
Late morning light falls through the canopy of overhanging trees, casting shifting patches of bright white and deep shadow across a narrow market lane in Southampton. A man stands beside a wooden stall, his posture bent in focused concentration as he runs a heavy steel scythe blade against a rectangular whetstone. The metal gleams wetly where the stone makes contact, against the duller, oxidized edges of the tool. Low-hanging gray clouds diffuse the sky, softening the shadows beneath the market awnings. Cobblestones glisten with recent moisture, reflecting the muted tones of the brickwork and the man's work-worn trousers. The perspective pulls attention along the lane's length, past stacked crates and hanging produce, to the solitary figure working in the quiet rhythm of late spring.
