Pale gray dawn light diffuses across a weathered corrugated metal wall beside a calm canal in Khartoum. A farrier stands at the frame's edge, his dark sleeves stained with thick horse dust and damp from the recent wet season storm. He wipes his palms together, a gesture of fatigue visible in the slump of his shoulders. Heavy moisture hangs in the air, evidenced by the sheen on the roof and the saturated green of reeds along the water's edge. Behind him, the canal reflects the pale sky, while puddles on the packed earth ground mirror the overcast clouds. A rusted horseshoe lies near his boot, its surface dull and wet, against the smooth, gray fabric of his trousers.
