Surreal Window in Russian Marsh Ruin in beneath a broken stone arch in Russia

Surreal Window in Russian Marsh Ruin

by Sienna Pennington

Early spring sunlight reflects off the dark, still waters of a flooded marsh visible through a rectangular opening in a crumbling stone arch. Moss and wet grass creep over the broken masonry, marking the thaw. Raindrops streak the glass pane, blurring the distant reeds. The impossible element is clear: the view through the glass shows a vast, wet landscape, yet the stone frame and the immediate foreground suggest a sheltered, indoor vantage point. The light catches the wet texture of the moss and the transparency of the rain on the glass. one drop of water slides down the center of the pane, distorting the reeds beyond it.
