Flowers Erupting from Mosque Floor During Sufi Zikr

by Briana Chambers

Cool, flat noon light floods the high vaulted ceiling of a Yangon mosque prayer hall, illuminating rows of worshippers in a perfect symmetrical circle. The floor consists of clean, pale concrete tiles and polished metal strips. From narrow fissures in the hard surfaces, vibrant bougainvillea and jasmine stems burst upward, their petals defying the rigid geometry of the architecture. The plants grow in dense clusters, their colors ranging from deep violet to bright white against the gray stone. Worshippers in traditional robes move in rhythmic unison, their bodies blurred slightly by motion while the flowers remain sharply rooted in the cracks. The air is still, the surfaces unblemished except for the sudden, impossible bloom of organic life breaking through the man-made structure.
